2010 review...

its NYE... just like last year, i am at work.... at KNC.... in Korea....
i just read my blog for NYE last year...... i summed up 2009 as a year where i made no personal progress, and it was a pretty average year at best.... 2010 was almost just a continuation of 2009 where nothing substantial was achieved.... no money was saved.... havent really studied chinese....
i was looking on the daily telegraph at the images of the top 50 winners of 2010.... greatest achievements in sport for aussies i guess....
the one that really didnt mean much unless u really know the situation is lleyton hewitt beating federer in the final in Germany this year....
i think hewitt lost to federer like 15 times in a row or something, and that was the beginning of his fall from world no. 1, as well as the top 20 in world tennis.... even now, he's outside the 32 seeds for the grand slams, but he still fights on to match it with the best and trouble top 10 players....
i guess, he has his fair share of critics as well, but nobody can argue his will and mongrel.... maybe thats what i need in 2011.... more C'MON~!!!
the other winner that i was thinking of posting here today was geoff huegill.... haha.... went from olympic champion swimmer, to a retired 130kg fatso fast-food junkie... to return to a fit athlete and a gold medallist at this years commonwealth games.....
well... i hope in 365 days time, i wont be writing here that i had another "average" year....

the ashes.... GONE~~~!!!

in sports, there is the cliche saying... "it aint over till the fat lady sings...."
well... even sportsbet has already paid out the winnings that england will retain the ashes....
today was just a sad sad day.... ricky ponting.... looking desperate.... kevin pieterson.... played and missed... thru to the keeper.... given not out..... they call for the video review....
this photo is ricky ponting arguing that the video replay is wrong.... ah..... aussie cricket is looking very desperate.....
if only ricky ponting realises that they made 98 with the bat..... and he can still salvage the ashes if he makes 200+ in his next innings.... even if he made a 100 i would be happy.... 50?? please.... what is his highest score this series anyway??? 13??? cant remember.... he didnt score much....
cmon aussies.... u have 10 wickets still in hand.... just block the ball away for 2 days....

xmas eve.... @ work...

It's christmas eve...... last year, i was a "foreign" teacher at work, so i had a week vacation from work... and i went on a road trip with ruadhri around the south and west coast of korea....
this year... im a "gyopo" teacher.... and i dont get that week off.....
and since xmas and new years both fall on a saturday... i dont have any extra days off this year.....
just work today..... tomorrow is xmas, but saturday.... and back at work on monday for a FULL week....
if anything, next week, i dont even get my wednesdays off anymore.... wednesday classes begin next week.....
also tomorrow, on christmas day.... i have to play baseball.... for the middle aged men in korea, christmas is half as important to them as baseball is... so since we are still playing catch up games for the excessive rain we had earlier this year, we have to play on christmas day.....
to be honest, i dont have any other xmas lunch plans, so its a good thing for me i guess....
ah...... back to work now~

cold december, hot december...

its snowing in seoul... then i saw this photo on facebook.... i guess it was taken my stella nuna....
im really missing the hot decembers.... this chill and snow in korea is really driving me mad....
i guess i was just not born for cold weather.... i feel like im getting a brain freeze just standing outside.... the only brain freezes that i enjoy is taking a big bite out of an ice cream during the summer.....
the sky in this photo is so blue as well.... so clear.... unlike the so grey.... so dull.... and smoggy skies here....
xmas is fast approaching.... end of year parties.... xmas dinners..... new years eve....
lets all keep the alcohol under control~~!!!

2nd place....

last weekend, i had a baseball final.... it was a 5 week knockout tournament... and it was the 5th week... the final....
the team that i play for has been eliminated 1st round of this league numerous times before, including last years 12-0 mercy-rule thrashing that we copped in my 3rd week since joining the club last year...
this year was different... we had comfortable wins in the first 2 rounds, came back from 8-1 down to win 9-8 in the 3rd round, then the 4th round (semis), we broke open a tight game in one inning to win comfortably....
funny... coz everyone was in form, playing so well, yet in the final.... everyone played below par... maybe it was finals nerves.... coz i heard it was the first final for the team in its 12 year history or something.... we lost 11-6..... but 2nd place was also the best result in a knockout tournament for this team too...
well... we still have 3 more competitions left to complete in the next 2 months.... and we're fairing well in all of them so hopefully, we can win something soon....
im glad this tournament is over, coz it was so far from my house... and i had to catch a subway there~

attacked....!!!

this photo is the result of artillery fire on yeonpyeong island.... which is in south korea....
the island is of the west coast of south korea, and is one of the nearest point in the Yellow Sea to north korea....
today, it was attacked by north korea with artillery fire....
obviously, this isnt the first time that the korean peninsular has come under tension, but this is said to be the biggest attack since the cease fire agreement from the korean war...
also incidents with the north have started to pick up in the severity with the sinking of the korean warship earlier this year in march, kllling 56 soldiers from the south korean navy. i dont think i put that up on my blog because it happened the day before my sister's wedding in korea.... which meant... only happy news at the time~ ^^
well, this was the 2nd attack this year.... a large scale one again... and the 7 month gap between attacks is making a few people here a bit worried..... the handover of the communist regime is said to be one of the major issues, with kim jong il's son being trained to lead, and being made to earn his stripes before he takes over the regime.... scary isnt it?
this isnt the first time, and im certain this wont be the last either.... i guess we'll just have to see.... i think everyone can sense that there is so much more politics and secrets behind the scene that people arent aware of.....
i dunno....

Taiwan burns Korean Flag...

The first major major controversy has occurred in the asian games.... and it happened in tae-kwon-do.... which has had its fair share of controversy since the last 2 olympics....
so... here is what happened that day.....
it is Vietnam vs Taiwan..... the taiwanese athlete was the hot shot gold medal favourite... and this was just her 1st round bout.... so... it was going to be a stroll in the park for her....
before a tae kwon do match begins, each athletes are told to kick the other athletes pads to make sure that the sensors are functioning properly.... thats the top picture (kicking without the head-gear)
on the heel of the taiwanese athlete, there are sensor pads.... they were used in the past, however, new rules have had them removed from competition.... so.... the referee tells the taiwanese athlete to remove them...... she runs over to her coach, and has the sensors removed....
during the match, she doesnt have those sensors..... thats the second picture.... there are no sensors on her heel.... and in about 90 seconds in the first round, the taiwanese athlete kicks her opponent twice in the head, and 3 times on the pads to take a very convincing 9-0 lead....
with 12 seconds left in the first round, the match is stopped.... a match referee on the side asks to see the taiwanese athletes gear, and then the resulting decision is.... she is disqualified.....
the taiwanese athlete is somewhat a national sporting star.... gold medal favourite.... so this didnt go down very well in taiwan.... KOREAN FLAGS WERE BURNT, AND A MASSIVE ANTI-KOREA MOVEMENT BEGAN..... of course, the taiwanese officials have taken this matter to the appropriate councils to have the decision overturned....
The Reaction in Korea...... well.... first..... the korean media is f-ked up.... and when it comes to sport, even the tv commentary is somewhat pathetic.... and the media addressed this matter in a amteurish way that the korean public (who are generally trend-following bandwagon riders) to react in disgust of taiwan....
the korean media says... why are they burning our flag? what did we do? the referee wasnt korean.... the opponent wasnt korean.... and the other side judges were also not korean....
yes... thats all true.... so why did a korean match official stop the match?? yes.... he was korean....
the korean people have replied on the internet with comments which are predominantly along the lines of, "just because we are better than u in taekwondo.... ur rival is china, its china's home games... blame china, not korea...."
the straight facts are..... korea knew that they didnt have an athlete that could compete with the taiwanese athlete in this division.... so they didnt enter an athlete in the division.... so in that sense, i dont think korea could argue they are better......
the conspiracy is that china had the other strong athlete, so they took the opportunity to DQ the taiwanese athlete to give the chinese athlete a better chance.... but thats really left field~
so what do i think??
i think taiwan should not be burning flags..... thats so wrong on so many levels.... and since they are a nation that has to compete as Chinese Taipei, and cant use their national flag in international events.... u would think they'd be more sensative about flags......
korean people shouldnt be so naive and defensive about the taiwanese reaction..... afterall, it was earlier this year, a korean man threatened to bomb the australian embassy because an aussie match official DQ'd a korean speed skater at the winter olympics..... and since korea still hasnt gotten over the 2002 Ohno incident.... 2004 gymnastics incident..... 2010 speed skating incident.... maybe they should be showing a little more sympathy to another country that just got pushed over for being a minnow country...
if taiwan wanna play with the big boys, they gotta start acting like the big boys....
and if korea doesnt like being bullied at the olympics, they should stop bullying at the asian games....

nobody remembers second...

mark webber said in the daily telegraph today that "NOBODY REMEMBERS SECOND"...
obviously, he has the biggest weekend of his life so far coz he needs to win the final F1 race in abu dhabi to win the driver's championship....
i just thought this headline was a catchy one, as well as a good reminder to give myself a big boot up the rear......
these days the weather is getting cold again in korea.... and whenever the cold front hits, all i think about is the nice warm weather back at home.... the beach weather.... although... it has been so long since i've been to a nice beach.... i dont even think im "ready" to be at the beach.... funny... yet so sad....
i wish i could hibernate~ haha.... having said that, i sometimes think i hibernate....
well... i hope mark webber can get up this weekend.... i'll make time on sunday afternoon to watch the race~
other things that are happening now.... well... the G20 summit is being held in seoul as we speak.... and the Asian Games begins now as well in Guangzhou, China..... i wonder how India will fare at the games.... they must have a pretty busy schedule with the commonwealth games, then the asian games..... haha.... lets see if they can get the medal haul like the comm games.... they could barely compete with australia in the commonwealth games... IN INDIA~ so i doubt they could compete with china.... IN CHINA~~
we'll see.... china is obviously always first.... but korea and japan always have a good tussle for second.... can india join the race for 2nd??

the lesson learnt from gambling....

MELBOURNE CUP 2010~~~
i missed it.... slept in till 2pm in korea... which is 4pm there.... and i missed the race!!!
luckily, all was not lost coz i told my sister my tips.... americain to win, and so you think as the safety bet..... 50 on americain, and 50 on so you think to place....
and.... americain won..... and so you think ran third~~~
but sister bet on americain to place.... -.-
and i slept in, so i didnt place my bets.....
so what is the lesson learnt today??
wake up early and gamble....!!!

leader vs follower...

its baseball finals.... the korean series has started... my team - Samsung Lions are in the K-series~! but they lost the first game today....
today while i was watching tv, someone was talking about being a leader amongst the group as to being the follower in the group.... which in turn (in korea especially) comes down to... are u the oldest in the group, or the youngest in the group..
i guess in any case, if ur in the middle of the social hierarchy, its a lot more comfortable... some who boss u around, but some that u can boss around.... i guess when i have family gatherings in korea, thats where i am... im "Cho 4"... out of 6... so i have 3 sisters bossing me around from above, yet 2 younger brothers to boss around below me....
but thats just twice a year... and day in, day out... my job is to be the oldest/leader/teacher in the class.... its great in a sense that the kids are like little robots in this country that pretty much do everything u say.... if they dont, they are scolded, and next time, they are put back into line...
yet... amongst the teachers that i work with... im the youngest... and that in itself has its ups and downs.... and on the weekends, im in 2 baseball teams.... and somehow i've found myself in the position where im the youngest in both teams.... not only that... there a couple of guys around 2~4 yrs older than me... but other than that... its like a 8~10+ year age gap....
being the youngest in korea has its own role.... ur like the little joker/jester.... which funnily enough seems to suit me more than being the oldest in a group.... also being the oldest/leader does have its tendency of making me super lazy... i realised that im more active and alot less lazier when i am the youngest in a group....
well, in other news....
my dads in korea at the moment.... been here.... 10 days now?? leaving on tuesday.... but i had to frantically clean up my house when he gave me an 11th hour notice that he was coming to korea... again.... its funny how healthy and organised my life gets when i have parental units around....
maybe im not so good at living alone.... or im TOO good at it.... its definitely not a healthy option for me.... is it time to find a roommate? or move in to my uncle's place? girlfriend??!! psht~ nah... thats just silly~ haha.... we'll see....

so far, so good... enough...

the commonwealth games.... 5 days of competition....
what has happened??
the GOOD thing is... no terrorist attacks...
that, and the fact that australia is dominating everything~!!!
besides that.... we have had construction falling apart.... scoreboards falling down.... we have an alleged contaminated swimming pool which is making the swimmers ill... the smoggy pollution is so bad, u can barely see 100m in front of u.... yet... the marathon runners will have to suck it all in for over 2 hours over 42kms...
we have had a couple of pathetic moments of aussie athletes being sore losers.... a wrestler and a cyclist that gave the officials a finger gesture because they didnt like their judgements.... poor effort~
aussie sprinter was disqualified 4 hours after winning her 100m sprint.... considering it is a 11 second race.... and she false started by 7 thousandth of a second.... the electronic pads give the indication that she false started instantaneously.... yet.... she was allowed to run her 11 second race, do her 20 minute lap of honour, and 4 hours later, while she lines up for the medal ceremony, she is disqualified.... the comm games admin needs to take a look at themselves.....
there are no fans anywhere.... and the fans who do attend events such as the swimming, archery, and other events dont know when to shut up and be quiet.... we have had swimmers false start and complain that the indian crowd cant stay quiet during the start..... pathetic.....
on BBC today, they even said that new delhi and india were nowhere near ready to host the games.... the only reason this game hasnt been a total disaster is that people expected more disasters.... but for an international sporting event, it has already exceeded every aspect of being an unsuccessful event....
i hope the aussies keep the gold coming, and we can out number ENG + IND + NZL + CAN gold medals combined~

Grand Final~!! finally~

the AFL, NRL grand finals were played out this week....
and really they were full of teams that i dont really care about....
collingwood magpies thrashed st kilda in the AFL grand final replay... it was so lop sided it wasnt even fun to watch.... last week's draw was so good... this entire week was anti-climatic....
the NRL final was interesting in the first 20 minutes... although once again i didnt care who won.... the dragons ended up thumping the roosters 32-8... so the last 30 minutes of the season was just a boring grind again....
the interesting thing i found today though was the Commonwealth Games website....
on the official page mind you~!!
the guy who makes the internet explorer header wrote commonwealth as two words... Common Wealth Games..... i heard there were groups in india who were going to riot the games coz the indian govt shouldnt spend money on the games, and should inject that money into the social welfare of the country.....
so its quite ironic they would call this the Common Wealth games....
it has also been tagged as the "shame games" coz the stadiums were still construction sites a few days ago, and a pedestrian bridge collapsed.... monkeys and snakes and filth in the village....
it starts in a few hours with the opening ceremony.... i hope all athletes are safe.... including the cricketers.... who are also in india.... funny... there werent any cricketers pulling out of going to india... not a single word was spoken about it.... yet u would think the commonwealth games was being held in a war zone..... damn exaggerating media....

going home is expen$ive~

everyone knows that sydney is one of the most expensive cities to live in...
i dont have any plans on moving back any time soon (since i have a contract here till sept 2011), but its sad to think that the exchange rates are going the wrong way for me....
since i arrived in korea, the exchange rates have just... kept climbing...
sure... its all good for those who want to come and visit korea... but just like in feb this year when i went back for a while... the money that i take from korea to sydney is like.... chump change....
grrrrrr....... i dont even know if korea has the ability right now to ever pull it back together....
i remember when $1 was like 650 korean won..... ah~~ i wish that would happen again....

renewed soccer hype~!

the korean under 17's girls won the FIFA world cup... they beat japan in the final in a penalty shootout....
its under 17's girls soccer... but what it has done is bring back this soccer hype in korea again....
only a month ago, the under 20's team came third in their world cup... and that (at the time) was the best performance in a FIFA tournament...
the soccer hype timing was kinda perfect coz tonight was the Bolton vs Manchester Utd match in the english premier league... this was advertised as the "korean derby" match, coz the 2 korean stars play for the respective teams....
for me, its a good hype coz i've been so busy at work recently, its nice to have good soccer matches to watch on tv.... also the NRL, AFL finals have kept my weekends worthwhile....
the AFL.... well... i would have put up a post about the AFL final today, but the grand final was a draw... and they are going to replay it next saturday..... next sunday is the NRL final.... so.... next weekend should be an indoor, glued to the TV weekend for me in seoul~
ah.... what am i going to do after the footy finishes??

what is happening??

we had over 2 weeks of continuous rain.... it was roughly 16 consecutive days of rain in seoul....
then we had about 40 hours of no rain.... and during that day, it was a wonderful, sunny afternoon.....
on that day, not only myself, but the majority of households and businesses were doing their laundry so they can put it out to dry.....
personally... i was hoping for the end of the rain... coz im currently living in a leaky house... and its driving me insane.....
boy was i wrong in judgment~!! i think today, we had the HEAVIEST rainfall yet~! it wasnt bucketing down.... it was like mother nature shooting a water cannon on seoul.....
so to sum up.... first we had the rainy season.... which goes for roughly 3 weeks.... then less than a week after that "supposedly" ended... we had 16 days of constant rain...... the typhoon followed that... then we had 1 and a half days of nice weather before having the heaviest rain yet....
i have seen enough rainfall for the remainder of 2010.... plz....
is australia still in the midst of a drought?? if anyone in korea says they are having a drought, im gonna slap them silly~!!

Wednesday, September 1, 2010

still raining....

despite my last blog over 2 weeks ago saying rain rain go away... it has continued to rain... EVERY F-ing DAY!!!!
my house is so damp, soggy, disgusting~~~
i would really love to move out..... if only i could get my bond money back....
all this rain is making everything a drag.... after the rainy season.... it has not rained more.... and korea is being hit with a typhoon as i speak..... so there's only going to be more rain for a few more days.... the only difference with a typhoon is.... ur umbrellas become useless... and u just have to get wet.....
all this damp weather is making me think of sunny sydney more and more....
the latest hit of nostalgia makes me want to be a uni student all over again....
i realised that when i was in china, i was having a lot more fun... a lot more alcohol...? does that really relate to fun?? a lot more.... ummm.... socialising.... does that relate to fun?? probably....
well... korea has kinda made me the anti-cho of china.... totally opposite.... i guess its a dramatic step to find a balance in life?? haha....
also when i was in china, i was still keeping in touch with the uni group more.... but now.... i guess everyone is busy.... everyone is tied down to their jobs.... some are busy making wedding plans.... some wish they had someone to make wedding plans with.....??? me??
ah well.... when the rain stops, im vowed to get off my bum and be more active... maybe not to the extent of china... i think... there is a difference between being 22 and 26..... is there?? maybe not.... but i think there is definitely a difference for me being in china as to korea.....
i dont get that "foreigner" feeling here so much... so i guess thats what stops me from being a wild-child like in china.... also in china nobody cares if ur a wild-child.... but here.... image and appearance is everything....
meh~ i wanna start making weekend trips around the country....
first things first..... let the rain stop now!!!!!!
Dear God,
Turn off the tap please!!!!!!!!!!
Amen.

rain rain go away~~

i thought the rainy season was over in korea... but still it just rains and rains and rains....

if it only rained... i dont think i would care so much.... but instead, we have this period of ridiculous sunshine that makes the entire city a big sauna.....

so~~~~ sticky, uncomforable and disgusting~~

i dont even have a air conditioner in my place, so the fan is on almost 24/7~

i resort to going to work early on the steamy days and i nap in my classroom which has a/c.....

today was yet another steamy, sticky day..... i hope the weather improves before i lose my mind~!!!

it wouldnt be so bad if i lived in busan.... coz i could just go for a swim in the ocean..... but seoul.... yuk~~ i wanna get out of this city.... need to buy a car so i can get away every weekend~

so much i want to do... so little motivation and $$$

spain spain spain~~

as a devoted sports fan... i wish i was spanish right now....
seriously... they are winning everything....
nadal used to be the "clay" guy.... now he's beating federer on grass....
contador is now the new dominating force in tour de france.... he's probably going to win more than lance armstrong..... (unless the aussies can pick it up a bit...)
and of course... spain won the soccer world cup.... they are also the holders of the Euro after winning euro 2008....
good times to be spanish right now~

a weekend in busan~

last week, rita, a friend from wuxi came to visit korea with her workmate....
on the weekend, we went down to busan because their flight back to shanghai departed from busan....
touring around busan.... although i had already been to some of the places, it just reinforced the fact that busan was a better city to live in....
fresh air... beaches.... more green, less concrete....
this photo was taken coz it just looked so funny that a tiny little boat was towing a bigger boat along the endless water..... david and goliath of boats....
next week i get another vacation... where should i go?? although its damn hot here... and its rainy season....

Tuesday, July 6, 2010

boredom = tiredness

last week, i had the week off work because the students had to prepare for their school exams....
this week... i have to come to work... but the students now actually HAVE their exams... so they dont come to class....
so... what do i do?? well.... i prepared for my summer classes... which took me about.... an hour?? that was yesterday.... and for the rest of the day, i watched monday night football....
today is tuesday... there's not football... nothing to do.... and i feel sooooooooooooo tired..... not doing anything at work actually makes me more tired than teaching.... having little kids in the classroom is such a wave of energy.....
i've pretty much spent the last 3 hours looking at everyone's photos on facebook.... and i took this photo today from Sam's facebook.... i like it.... its the sunset in Broome.... cant believe he drove all the way out there..... sounds fun~!! at least a lot more exciting than my day at work....
meh.... 3 more hours of nothing-ness.... maybe i'll take a nap.... then later tonight its the 1st semi-final at the world cup....
im tipping a holland vs spain final.... and spain to win....
u heard it here first~~ ^^

no shame~

its the end of the world cup for korea now...
losing to uruguay 2-1....
the first goal that they conceded was a howler... defensive error... keeper error.... just gave suarez an open goal to shoot the ball into....
having said that, the korean equaliser was a keeper error from the uruguayan keeper...
the match winner from suarez was a beauty... curled it around off the post into the net....
korea had their chances... could have got a dream start with a free kick, but that hit the post and went the wrong way~
there is no shame in losing in the round of 16's.... i just hope i dont have to wait another 8+ years to see it again....
i hope uruguay wins now.... so that korea only lost to the eventual winners... haha

Korea goes thru~!!

nervous nervous game.....
but in the end, a 2-2 draw with nigeria was enough to take us thru to the second round of the world cup~~
this is the photo after park chu young scored off a free kick.....
this was great, especially based on the fact that he was the one who conceded the own goal against argentina.... well, he copped some crap from the korean public, but now he's back on the good side of the press~~ haha... good on him~
Uruguay now.... not easy, but not impossible by any means....
woo hoo~!!! im excited!!!
tonight... australia.... hanging on by a thread.... they can get thru on a miracle~~
cmon~

Saturday, June 19, 2010

robbed...

australia are essentially out of the 2010 world cup now....
just like 2006... it ends sourly with a spastic call from the referee....
harry kewell is sent off in the 24th minute for an intentional handball in the penalty box....
first of all... we should have had cahill in this game....
secondly.... it wasnt a handball... so it shouldnt be a penalty kick, nor a red card.... in the end, ghana scores the penalty and the game is tied 1-1.....
ghana have now beaten serbia 1-0 with a "handball" penalty, and drew australia with a penalty as well.....
an african nation WILL win the world cup.... just keep giving them penalties....

Sunday, June 13, 2010

just... fever~~

well... both key players that i talked about before the world cup have made an impact in the world cup.....
Jisung Park scored korea's 2nd goal yesterday to secure a 2-0 win for korea....
Tim Cahill got a red card tonight against germany in a 4-0 drubbing....
realistically, in this tough group, the aussies werent expecting too much.... it was the other 2 games where we need maximum points....
in all fairness, serbia and ghana are probably thinking the same.... germany was always going to dominate this group.... so this red card is really the big downer for the socceroos now.... in a mediocre at best socceroos... to play ghana without cahill.... well.... its gonna be tougher than it already is.....
im still a bit dumbstruck as to why pim verbeek played cahill at striker.... i dont think i've seen him ever play upfront.... hence the lack of ball... which probably led to the mass frustration for cahill....
ah well.... its only 1.... 2 more games to go.... cmon~!!!
on a much much brighter note for the aussies~~
Lleyton Hewitt beat federer on grass!!! broke a 16 match losing streak to the fed-express.... saw the match.... i cant even say that federer played that bad.... hewitt just looked great on grass....
wimbledon again???
hmmm.....

World Cup fever... in Seoul~

It's on~!!! the world cup has started, and on Day 2, Korea played their first match...
they beat greece 2-0 in the first match~~
i went out to Seoul Square to watch it on a big screen.... there were thousands of people and the entire square was just one big mosh-pit..
to make everyone more crazy, it was bucketing rain at times... so everyone was drenched, going wild in the rain.... there was a supporters' concert which started 2 hours before kick-off, and people just kept coming and crowding up until the square had overflowed, and the police had to close off the roads so people could stand on the road and cheer.....
when korea scored their first goal early in the game, random strangers were pulling each others shirts and hugging everyone around them.... kinda really awkward.... but it was still fun~
the 3rd match last night was USA vs ENG.... we went to Itaewon... which is just a seedy foreigners' hangout area in seoul... its where alot of the US military guys hang out... the sports bar that we went to was packed out like a mosh-pit again... half poms... half yanks....
who did i cheer for?? i was fully chanting and cheering for THE DRAW~!!! and.... it was 1-1~~
NOTE: korea is the only team to have scored 2 goals in the world cup~~ haha... lets see if that would last another day with algeria playing... -.-
C'mon AUSSIES~!!! lets kick some german ass~!!

rivalry matchups...

Korea vs Japan.... Australia vs NZ....
awesome rivalry... i was surprised korea had it pretty comfortable... 2-0.... i thought japan would put up a better fight in front of their home crowd...
more surprisingly, NZ really put it on... and australia seriously got away with one for a 2-1 victory....
the world cup is so close now~~~
the past 2 weeks have been really hectic for me.... kyung came to korea for his sisters wedding... a couple of boys that i know who are in the korean military came out for their breaks... beau's family is in seoul, and another one of beau's college mates was here as well last weekend....
put ALL of that together with a long weekend last week..... yeah.... thats way too much drinking and gambling for one week....
next week is rory's farewell week... so until further drinking is required, im going to stay away from alcohol..... seriously.... i feel so lethargic after last week.... although.... it was one of the best week/weekend i've spent in seoul.... so many looney moments....
ah well.... im back at knc now.... except im free on wednesdays.... no work!!! which is good this week coz the state of origin is on now....
i dont even know who i support now in the state of origin.... i've lost all reason to support QLD now... i only liked them coz when i first followed rugby league, i just cheered for all bulldogs players, and QLD had like half a dozen of them.... now my favourite players are in NSW, and im from NSW.... so....
meh~~

Jeju Island...

jeju island is like the 'tasmania' of korea... its an island off the south coast of the mainland....
jeju though... its more a honeymoon destination....
i went there with rory and beau.... and mark was there for some ultimate frisbee comp.... which meant there were alot of foreigners on the island that weekend....
jeju was quite good.... clean, fresh air..... it wasnt quite like seoul or other parts of korea....
we did some touristy things too.... went to another island off jeju island called, Woo island.... and this island is pretty tiny.... we rented scooters on the island, and rode it around the entire island... its like a 2 hour scooter trip on the island... alot of fun~~ im thinking i need to buy me a scooter now~~ haha...
end of holidays now... back to work... and now im back at knc working... back at the old job... i hope it works out well...

cheating in sport...

they say its the darkest hour in rugby league...
melbourne storm, probably the best team in the league for the past 4 years, the benchmark team... they have been stripped of 2 premierships from '07 and '09... they need to pay back the NRL $1.1million in prize money....
they cheated the salary cap by $1.7 mil over the past 5 years....
from a bulldogs supporter... well, suck it up... and really... i think im with the majority of the public and press when they say that there are many more clubs cheating the cap....
ah well... after the 2002 incident for the dogs, they stuck by and won the premiership in '04... but after that, reality checks in, they cant afford the players, and now they are mostly gone...
the simple fact is, no player is going to settle on a pay cut and stay in the NRL if they can just goto england, france or union for more money... so if the good players are constantly re-signing contracts in the NRL, they are getting pay raises....
if it took a whistleblower to catch the storm... well, the other clubs wont be caught out unless its broken from within the club... they should have a salary cap on the admin too for hush money...

time to get employed~

i've been in korea now for 3 weeks... my mum went back home a few days ago.... dad will probably go back in the next week as well....
since i've been back, all i've done is just travel around with family... havent even thought about getting a job yet....
now that i've spent a few quiet days alone at home, im starting to feel the need to start looking for a new job....
as for being "self-employed" in korea... well, it has been concluded that its really difficult to do anything in korea without connections... and as for connections... i just dont have enough in korea... also helping students prepare to study in australia isnt really going to work as going to the US is now cheaper than australia.... damn american economy~ -.-
i've decided to live like the majority of other people my age.... WORK HARD... haha... that doesnt mean im going to quit and find an office job... it means, i'll work several teaching jobs, tutor on the side... just "work office hours" teaching... i'll give myself 6 months or so... see how much money i can save up... once i have more money saved up, then i can think about what im going to do with it... meh~
actually... i feel so lethargic these days, its not even funny.... maybe its the changing weather here... maybe i just dont want to be back in korea.... thats probably it... 2 weeks in sydney was waaaaaaaay too short....
anyways.... im planning to get employed by May.... so i better get cracking and go around spraying my resume and do interviews... blah~~ i hate this part of employment... interviews are so superficial and its just how well u act and lie... although... i think im pretty good at putting on a show and lying.... i just hate having to get up and move and go there... hahahaha
meh~ i better start exercising too now that the weather aint too cold.... my baseball season starts this saturday~!!

from the archives...

life back in korea isnt any easier....
if anything, its harder than last year because i've come back with alot of uncertainties... that is... i dont have a job yet....
its not that finding a job is hard... im just in a pickle as to what kind of job i want....
i had plans to start my own thing... but the more i look into it, its hard to start something in korea without connections....
i guess i can still spend a few more weeks trying and contemplating about what i should do...
i found this photo at my grandma's house last week.... it was taken in 1989... when we first moved to australia.... haha... i wish i was that young again...

final days at home...

last week at home.... 3 more days before returning to korea...
before going to korea, we let off some pest bombs in our house, so last night, my mum and i stayed at my sister's new honeymoon home... haha
they are in korea.... so.... its an empty house~
last night was man utd vs liverpool... clutch game that could decided the premier league race....
man utd won 2-1 in a thriller~!! torres scored... rooney scored... then park ji sung scored the winner for united~~ ah... the 3 best goal scorers in the world.... ah.... maybe not....
anyways... its good that all the koreans are hitting some good form this year... world cup year~!
actually, i think its better to watch the world cup in korea than australia.... definitely will be going out to see the koreans games on the street wearing a red shirt~
3 months to go??

and im really glad to have a brother-in-law now too~ haha
i chose this photo for 2 reasons....
firstly.... i think it looks really good...
secondly.... maybe my sister or her husband dont want to be seen on my blog....

malaysia...

so after korea, i went to malaysia for 4 days...
it was really really exciting...
i was only in Kuala Lumpur, but they have so many high rises....
of course, the main attraction was the petronas towers.... the twin towers.... i didnt get to go up those towers because something like only 1000 people get to go up, first come first served.... i was never going to get up and be there by 8am....
instead, i went up the KL tower... the Menara.... from there u can go to an observation deck and look around KL.... thats where this photo is taken....
i also met my mum's friend's son... Alvin... he took me around to many tourist spots in KL which was really cool too... and as for alvin's car.... well... i reckon in could live in that..... the interior of his car was better than my room in korea....
i've been back in sydney for almost a week now.... but i've been so busy with my sister's wedding preps.... i dont know why i have to do so much work for my sister to get married.... -.-
anyways, today is wedding day... so i'll post something about the wedding soonish~

the end... new beginning...

it has been a pretty busy week..... final week at work PLUS the winter olympics....

the first of the winter olympics update is the ridiculous DQ of the korean women's short track team.... because they really got DQ'd for nothing... and the referee was australian.... and the reason he DQ'd the koreans was later proven to be wrong... but he stood firm on the fact that he won't overturn his decision..... which took gold away from the koreans....

then lydia lassila won gold in the aerials.... 2nd gold for australia~!!! and she beat the chinese to win the gold~!!!

the biggest news of all is kim yuna... she won the figure skating today.... i think the whole nation watched that.... yeah... i cant say im really into figure skating... but... she's still hot~!! and she's korean~!!! haha

i finished work today... final day.... now i just need to clear out my room, move out, then head to malaysia, then sydney.....

2010... new beginning is really starting now.....

life after KNC.....

i think im going to miss alot of my kids actually.... i had kids who asked for my autograph today... hahahaha... that was a weird feeling.... haha..... so cute~

oh well.... hope there's some good days ahead now~

Lee J.S. double GOLD~!!

Lee Jung Su, the korean who won the 1500m short track speed skating also won the 1000m event today...
2nd gold medal... nice~
the Korean who tried to squeeze in and caused that crash in the 1500m, Lee Hosuk.... he got silver....
ironically.... Lee J.S, squeezed past Lee H.S in the last corner.... man, i feel sorry for the guy who came second...
people gave him crap for trying to overtake a countryman on the last corner.... but another guy did it to him and stole the gold... -.-
meh~
i just care that korea got the gold~ ^^

before these olympics, an asian had never won a medal in the long distance speed skating...
korea had also never won a gold medal in 74 years in the sport....
now we have a silver medalist in the 5000m, and also we won our second gold medal this morning!!!
Lee Sang Hwa.... the fastest woman on ice now...
GOLD in the 500m speed skating....
Korea is the first country to win both the mens and womens 500m speed skating.... we are now the new jamaica of ice sprinting~!!!
FIGHTING~~~~!!!

2nd GOLD news~

Mo Tae Bum...
The MO~
this was korea's first speed skating gold medal EVER~~
there were a few other koreans who were one of the few favourites to win the event....
but he was an unknown, even in korea....
the youngest member on the korean speed skating team... first olympics.... came from nowhere to win the gold in front of two japanese skaters~
go the MO~~~~~~
the other korean who was tipped to medal finished 4th by 0.03 seconds~~ daaaaaaaaaaa~~ 4th!

the first GOLD news~

the first gold has come on the first full day of competition....

in the 1500m short track speed skating, korea's Lee Jung Su won gold...

it wasnt all good news though... going into the final lap, korea was 1-2-3.... looking like sweeping the medals... but the korean who was in third tried to squeeze through in the final corner and accidentally took out the other korean in 2nd....

they both fell, and both missed out on medals.... so instead of gold, silver and bronze.... korea only took the gold, and the US skaters picked up the silver and bronze.... =(

ah well.... gold is gold~~ i hope there's no in-house fighting as a result thats going to harm their relay chances....

vancouver time~~

its winter olympics time~~~
go for gold~~~~~~~~!!!
kim yuna in the figure skating for korea.....
tora bright in the half-pipe for australia......
i hope the olympics will be nice and exciting... lots of medals for korea and australia... that way, the next two weeks will fly by, and i'll be back in sydney before u know it~~
haha
its a long weekend here in korea, coz its korean (chinese) new year.... and on march 1st, there is another long weekend....
so before i go home, i just need to look forward to 2 long weekends, a korea vs japan soccer match, the winter olympics, and a possible snow trip~~
and the best of all.... bonus pay for finishing work~~!!

already february....

wow.... january flew by, didnt it??
im still not used to writing 2010.... im still accidentally writing 2009 on things....
todays photo.... of course... its me.... its me with... glow stick glasses....
well... now that its february.... im in my final month of my contract....
february also means... birthday... which means im another year older.... 26 this year now....
on march 3, i will leave korea.... im going to malaysia for a few days, and then i'll be back in sydney on the 7th....
i'll be back in korea pretty soon though... because of my sisters wedding, i cant stay in sydney too long.... i will be back in korea on the 25th??? so... really... not even 3 weeks back at home....
2010 is the year i make or break in a business move.... if things dont work out smoothly as i planned, then i may be back in sydney in june this year.... so maybe 3 weeks for now in sydney would be more than enough.....
oh well~~ im definitely more active in 2010 than i was in 2009....
thats a good start.... =)

monthly test day~

its monthly test day again....
which means, i can sit down at work... and just monitor the kids so that they dont cheat....
i had a pretty tiring weekend... with a double-header in baseball... and i've got a sore knee, so sitting down today is pretty sweet~
baseball was great on a personal note, but pretty bad from a teams point of view.... since joining this team, i've only lost 2 games prior to this weekend, but we lost both games on the weekend... it was a top of the table clash.... so we are definitely not top anymore...
i went 4 from 4.... with 4 walks.... which means, over the 2 games, i went to bat 8 times... never got out~ muhahahahaha... what a hero~
anyways.... its hewitt vs federer tonight.. in about 20 minutes.... i shall be watching the kids doing their exam, and keeping an eye on that game too....
i know alot of aussies dont like hewitt, but he's still the best we've had for a long time now... cmon~~~ stop losing to federer dammit!!!!!!!
stosur just lost to the younger gorilla williams.... -.-
cmon hewitt~

as the snow melts...

after the massive snowfall... it has just been cold for the past week... today wasnt so cold... and alot of the snow has melted.... so the roads are just sloppy and slippery now....
last weekend was a relatively quiet one for me....
i think i slept for most of saturday, and stayed up all night saturday just watching tv.... then went to baseball early sunday morning... and then came home to sleep all sunday afternoon as well....
i woke up at 1am monday morning.... seriously... what do u do if u wake up at 1am???
i tried to go back to sleep.... but i slept for around 12 hours since noon.... so i ended up watching tv again until 7am, then went to sleep.... i still got up alright for work....
the aussie open tennis has started.... just as the test match cricket ended....
gives me something to watch before and at work~~ hahahaha
6 more weeks to go....

counting down...

counting down the days at work... i like the kids here so much, sometimes the insane thought of working here longer crosses my mind...
but common sense provails.... im outta here at the end of my contract...
sisters getting married in march... which means, i'll probably be in sydney for 3 weeks at the most... then back to korea for her wedding here.... then im not sure if i'll stay or go back to sydney....
if i stay.... i guess i'll have to find a new job and work....
but i want to go home and bum for a few months.... hmmm.... goto the footy every weekend or sumthin.....
i dont know why im so indecisive these days.... i see the ups and downs of coming straight back to korea, and i see the ups and downs of staying in sydney for a while....
now that im also leaving this place at the end of feb, if i want to live in korea after march, i need to find a new place.... thats just a pain in the rear end as well....
hmmm..... decisions decisions..... only 55 more days to make a decision....

first one of the year...

the first good news of the year... the first monday back at work was a "snow day".... which for all the aussies who've never seen snow.... we dont goto work coz it snowed so much......
supposedly, it was the most daily snowfall in 103 years or something.... nice~
and now that im back at work for the new year, we get to do a make up class on saturday~ fan-bloody-tastic!!!!!!!
well.... i dont really mind... like i've always said... work is the most fun that i have on an average day in korea.... the 2nd photo was taken today... in class.... some of the kids in korea are wearing these stuff for winter.... looks so cool.... but i dont know what people would think of me if i wore one in public... so im just going to wear one in my own classroom.... i make the rules in my room~
